Friday, October 30, 2009Ballhawk Byrd Flies High
1) The Bills were dominated on the stat sheet against to Carolina, but thanks to a misfiring Jake Delhome and rookie leather-lover J. Byrd, the Bills hobbled out of Carolina with another W.
2) Jets QB Marc Sanchez took a little time during last Sunday's game to order himself a hotdog...with mustard. Okay or not okay? The brothers debate. 3) The guy who put up the "Fire Dick Jauron" billboard stops by for a chat with Riley and Bennett. Would he give up his right nut for a Superbowl victory? Listen in for the details. 4) Riley's worried how the Bills will fit all those talented safeties into the line-up, while Bennett's worried his mother-in-law might not have taken too kindly to the birthday cake Bennett and his son served up this week. Eat up, grandma! 5) The Texans come to town, and it looks like Andre Johnson and Mario Williams are going to play. Uh, that can't be good.
Comments:
Not sure if you guys ever watch NFL network but they broke down the Bills defense prior to the Panthers game - and they singled out Byrd.
He looked horrible against the run. Constantly out of position. I don't think he's all that, just someone who is back there freelancing.
Noticed this as well (though to be fair, it only matters that he's out of position because the front seven sucks so much against the run). Honestly, despite how well Byrd has been playing I think Whitner is the full timer when he returns and Byrd and Scott are rotated out depending on down and distance.
Thanks for pointing that out.
I think we're high on Byrd partly because what else is there to be high on? The guy's a CB by trade, so his learning curve playing the run from the FS spot is going to be steep. This may display my lack of football knowledge, but of all the players on the field, how much can we really pin the run D problem on Byrd? It seems to me that falls to the LB corp mostly. Byrd's ints will drop, but right now he's seeing the field -- at least from a pass D perspective -- better than anyone we've had in the past 5 years.
Hey guys, thanks once again. I had fun talking with you guys. Much more relaxed than the majority of my other interviews!
Nate - great point.
But WTF happened since week one when the Bills were getting tons of pressure and penetration with just four rushers? Things are so bad now - the Bills are playing eight and nine at the line, and allowing an average (let me repeat that) AN AVERAGE! of 300+ per game in the last two weeks. Oh - and Ralph is apparently getting his Hall of Fame ring at half-time. I'm booing that wrinkled old sausage stroker.
You won't catch any complaints from me here. Booing Ralph is totally appropriate. He rode a 2 game win streak to get his ring in public and not get booed.
